Estel — White paper
A comprehensive model of health and well-being in the age of a renewed ontology

Preamble
This white paper lays out the theoretical foundations of the Estel platform. It is addressed to three audiences: the scientific partners likely to put our conceptual framework to the test; the practitioners — from conventional medicine to integrative approaches — called upon to use it or to engage in dialogue with it; and the informed community seeking to rethink what "taking care of oneself" means in the twenty-first century.
Estel does not offer yet another tool within the already saturated ecosystem of digital health. Estel proposes a shift of postulate: to keep intact the scientific-causal edifice that structures Western health today, and to shift, upstream, the ontological foundation upon which it was historically built. We hold that the current limits of quantified approaches to well-being are not technical limits — they are the consequences of a materialist postulate that, by construction, disqualifies an entire body of human knowledge concerning the body, health, and meaning. The Estel platform is built upon a different hypothesis: consciousness is ontologically primary, the body and the environment are the forms under which this consciousness manifests at the scale of our perception, and health is the art of reading these forms together without reducing them.
This document sets out the architecture that follows from this: three layers (observations, models, interpretation) and two poles (that which is perceived as internal to the body, that which is perceived as external to it). It explains why this architecture preserves the scientific-causal model as a central and operational bedrock, and integrates, as a complement — on the basis of the acknowledged ontological shift — traditional Asian and Ayurvedic medicine, constitutional typologies, symbolic and hermeneutic grammars, and the practices of altered states of consciousness, which millennia of humanity have elaborated and which contemporary research is rediscovering. This is neither eclecticism, nor concession, nor undifferentiated juxtaposition: it is a motivated articulation, in which each model is drawn upon in its own register and under the status that is properly its own.
Why Estel?
Estel is a Sindarin word designating a particular form of hope: the deep trust rooted in the very nature of things, which depends neither on visible proofs nor on circumstances. This is precisely the disposition that a holistic approach to health requires: to welcome together science and the symbolic, measurement and narrative, biology and meaning, without demanding that each register be validated by the protocol of the other. The name expresses the stance that the application cultivates — trust in the coherence of the real beneath the plurality of its languages. Short, singular, memorable, it naturally filters the audience that recognizes itself in this disposition. Finally, it inscribes the product within a mythopoetic tradition consistent with the imaginal dimension that Jung and Hillman made thinkable.
1. A bedrock to keep, a postulate to shift
For several centuries, the West has built an edifice of knowledge of considerable power upon a particular ontological postulate: fundamental reality is material, and what authentically exists is what can be measured, reproduced, and causally isolated. From this postulate have issued the experimental method, biomedical medicine, physiology, pharmacology, epidemiology, and the neurosciences. Together they form a model whose services rendered to humanity are immense and whose internal validity and operational centrality Estel in no way calls into question.
It is worth underscoring a direct consequence of this postulate, one that is rarely brought to the fore: within a materialist framework, consciousness itself must be postulated as an emergent property of material processes. This is a logical consequence and not a result — no argument, no experiment has ever established how purely physical processes would give rise to lived experience (this is what David Chalmers calls the "hard problem of consciousness"). What presents itself spontaneously as scientific self-evidence is in reality a postulate whose counterpart — the emergence of consciousness — has never been demonstrated. To acknowledge this does not disqualify science, which continues to operate perfectly at its own level; it merely reminds us that the choice of materialism as an ontology is a choice, not an established fact.
We state from the outset a distinction that governs all the rest of the document: this model is the bedrock upon which Estel is built, but its centrality is historical and practical, not ontological. It is central because it is the common, shared, tooled, and tested edifice — the one that structures the conversation about health in our societies today. It is not superior, in the metaphysical sense, to the other ways in which human cultures have understood the body, health, and meaning.
This distinction matters because it modifies the nature of what we propose. Estel does not claim to replace the scientific-causal model with another model that would compete with it. Estel proposes to shift a postulate — a single one — and to observe what that shift reopens.
The postulate that is shifted is that of the primacy of the material. In its place, we adopt that of analytic idealism: consciousness is ontologically primary, the body and the environment are the forms under which this consciousness manifests at the scale of our perception. This shift is not a rupture against science — it is a modification upstream, at the level of the ontological foundation, which leaves intact what the scientific-causal model produces at its own level.
What this shift does change, on the other hand, is the space of what becomes thinkable again. As long as materialism is taken for granted, an entire set of knowledge systems — traditional Asian and Ayurvedic medicine, symbolic chronobiologies, constitutional typologies, hermeneutic grammars, shamanic traditions, and the therapeutic use of altered states of consciousness, accumulated by humanity over millennia — are disqualified a priori, before examination. Not examined and refuted, but rendered unthinkable by construction. Changing the postulate does not automatically validate these models. It reopens the possibility of examining them, of drawing upon them where they contribute something, and of articulating them with the scientific-causal model instead of opposing them to it.
It is therefore the following architecture that takes shape, and that the rest of the document develops: the scientific-causal model as a bedrock preserved in all its rigor; the change of ontological postulate as pivot; the other models as complementary integrations rendered thinkable again by this pivot. This is neither an abandonment of science nor an indifferent eclecticism. It is the precise gesture of someone who keeps what works, shifts what needs to be shifted, and lets in what the shift renders once again welcome.
2. Ontological foundations: analytic idealism
2.1 Consciousness as primary datum
We adopt as our founding postulate that of analytic idealism as developed in particular by Bernardo Kastrup in his philosophical work, extended by the contemporary non-dual tradition (Rupert Spira) and converging, on several critical points, with the depth psychology of Carl Gustav Jung.
The central thesis is simply stated: consciousness is ontologically primary. It is not produced by the brain. It is not an epiphenomenon of physical processes. It is the fundamental fabric of which everything — including what we call "matter" — is made.
Let us clarify from the outset a point that will avert recurrent misunderstandings: consciousness as thus posited is not a subject. It experiences nothing, has neither intention nor perspective of its own, "gives" nothing to itself. It is the field within which all experience, all perspective, all subjects appear. Subjectivity and lived experience in the ordinary sense of the term emerge at the level of alters — dissociated modulations of this field, which will be discussed below. For the sake of readability, we shall sometimes employ formulations such as "consciousness manifests under such-and-such a form" or "such a thing is a manifestation of consciousness": these formulas are always to be understood in the sense of manifestation, never of a subjectivity that would experience.
Terminological note. For convenience, and because it is the vocabulary familiar to our readers, the document most often uses the word subject to designate an alter in the technical sense — the person, the user of Estel, the one who bears a body and recounts their situation. We resort to alter only where the ontological status of this locus of experience (as a modulation of universal consciousness) matters for the argument. A glossary at the end of the document recapitulates the technical terms drawn upon here.
Terminological note — on the word "consciousness." The word "consciousness" will designate in this document two realities that are not to be conflated. In the primary sense, ontological, it designates the field posited above — substrate, never subject, without degrees or modulations of its own. In the secondary sense, phenomenological, it designates the quality of the experience borne by an alter: always lived, susceptible to degrees, intensities, subtleties, and modulations, and therefore educable and transformable. It is this second sense that is at play in common expressions such as "altered states of consciousness," "becoming conscious," "the refinement of consciousness through contemplative practice," or again in debates over the consciousness of an AI system. The two senses are ontologically linked — the second is a local modulation of the first — but they do not obey the same grammar and do not designate the same thing: the first is an invariant ground, the second a graduated lived experience. The context will make clear, in what follows, which is at play; in case of ambiguity we shall speak of universal consciousness for the first and of individual consciousness (or the consciousness of an alter) for the second. This distinction matters in particular for what follows: to speak of degrees, of evolution, or of transformation of consciousness is legitimate in the second sense; it introduces no hierarchy in the first sense — consciousness as substrate knows no degrees, and no alter is ontologically "more" or "less" conscious than another.
This thesis is not mystical. It rests on a set of tight philosophical arguments, of which the principal ones are as follows:
- The parsimony argument. All knowledge that we have of anything whatsoever reaches us through consciousness. To postulate in addition a distinct material substrate in order to "explain" consciousness adds an entity of which we have no direct evidence, and gives rise to the "hard problem of consciousness" (Chalmers): how purely physical processes would give rise to lived experience. Idealism eliminates this problem by turning it around: what is to be explained is not how matter produces experience, but how experience presents itself under the aspect of matter.
- The argument from dissociation. Kastrup proposes a model in which individual conscious beings are alters dissociated from a universal consciousness — analogous to the multiple personalities observed clinically in dissociative identity disorder. This model accounts both for the plurality of subjective perspectives and for the underlying unity of experiential reality.
- Convergence with non-duality. The experiential tradition borne by Spira, heir to Advaita Vedānta, is not a metaphysical speculation but the patient phenomenological report of what reveals itself when attention turns back upon the ground from which it emerges. Its convergence with the conclusions of philosophical analysis constitutes a body of indications that is not negligible.
2.2 What contemporary physics suggests without proving
We are careful not to fall into the metaphorical and often abusive use of quantum mechanics. There remain, however, solid elements that it would be dishonest to ignore:
- The measurement problem. The standard interpretation of quantum mechanics leaves open the question of what provokes the "collapse of the wave packet." The von Neumann–Wigner interpretation, a minority one but never refuted, locates this collapse in the conscious act of observation. QBism (Quantum Bayesianism), developed in particular by Christopher Fuchs, interprets the wave function as an agent's state of belief — explicitly bringing the quantum description back to a relation between a conscious observer and their world.
- Non-separability. The experimental violations of Bell's inequalities (Aspect 1982, Zeilinger et al., Nobel Prize 2022) establish that reality, at its fundamental level, is not made of locally separate objects bearing properties defined independently of their measurement. This non-separability is compatible with — and rendered natural by — an ontology in which fundamental reality is a unified field whose "objects" are local modulations.
- The work of Donald Hoffman (The Case Against Reality, 2019) proposes, on the basis of evolutionary simulations, that sensory perceptions are not faithful representations of reality but an adaptive interface — analogous to the icon on a computer desktop, useful precisely because it does not resemble the file it designates.
None of these elements "proves" analytic idealism. Together, they establish that classical materialist ontology is no longer the default position of contemporary science, and that there exists a legitimate conceptual space for approaches such as the one we propose.
2.3 The status of measurement
It follows from the foregoing that to measure is not to extract an objective datum from a real that would exist independently. To measure is to actualize a relation between an alter that questions and the layer of experience upon which the questioning bears. Measurement is always situated — at a scale, in a language, according to an apparatus, for an observer.
This does not make it any less precious. It makes it relative to its level. A blood-glucose reading is a perfectly reliable measure of what it measures, within the framework in which it is defined. It does not exhaust what the state of the person it speaks of is, and it must not be confused with that state. The entire Estel platform is built to hold together this twofold affirmation: measurements count, and they are not everything.
What holds for measurement holds, by extension, for the scientific-causal model itself. It is, like any model, a situated representation — of considerable operational power within its field, without equivalent where it operates, and nevertheless a representation: shaped by a conceptual framework, by choices of demarcation, by a historical horizon. This acknowledgment does not equalize the models, and does not say that all representations are of equal worth — which would be a relativism from which we guard ourselves (§11.2). It says something else: that the gap between the scientific-causal model and the other registers that Estel draws upon is not a gap between the real and narratives, but a gap between representations situated at different levels and under different regimes of validation. It is this acknowledgment that makes possible the pluralist articulation set out in the remainder of the document, without ontological hierarchy between the registers, and with a firm operational hierarchy where one is called for.
An example allows us to fix concretely the reach of this relativization, which Chapter 7 will take up in developed form: the hospital recourse, in France, to fire-cutters (coupeurs de feu) — practitioners who, through the laying on of hands and inherited formulas, intervene on burns, notably radiation burns in the context of radiotherapy — is a widely documented clinical fact. Studies conducted in several French cancer centers show that 40 to 50% of patients treated by radiotherapy call upon them, with a subjective benefit frequently reported, without the mechanisms at play being describable by the tools of current biomedicine. Measurement, as it is defined at its level, does not see what is at stake there — nor does it deny it. This case does not disqualify the scientific-causal model; it merely reminds us that a thing can exist clinically without the categories of biomedical measurement restoring it, and that health, as a practice, has always composed with registers that measurement does not exhaust.
2.4 Axiological neutrality and the distinction between pain and suffering
The framework we have just laid out calls for two clarifications that the following chapters will draw upon without always restating them.
Axiological neutrality of consciousness. Analytic idealism does not postulate a morally charged consciousness. At the level of consciousness as primary datum, the categories of "good" and "evil" have no pertinence: they emerge at the level of individual alters, on the basis of situated perceptions and cultural contexts. It follows that our framework is not a disguised spiritualist doctrine, that no experiential situation is ontologically "a sign" or "a punishment," and that Estel — as a platform — will never grade a constitutional, symbolic, or biological configuration along a moral axis. A configuration is what it is, in its place, to be interpreted in its context.
Pain and suffering: two orders to distinguish. Contemplative phenomenology, the contemporary clinic of pain, and the Buddhist traditions converge on a distinction that is structuring for our framework. Pain is a first-order experiential fact — sensation, qualia, a datum of embodiment that belongs to the very nature of a situated consciousness. Suffering is what the mind adds on top of it: interpretation, resistance, projection into a feared future, comparison with a regretted past, the narrative that transforms an instant into destiny. The Buddhist tradition speaks of the "two arrows": the first (pain) strikes anyone who is embodied; the second (suffering) is loosed by the manner in which the mind receives the first.
This distinction is not abstract. It grounds clinical approaches with documented results — mindfulness meditation (MBSR, Kabat-Zinn), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), Buddhist and non-dual contemplative traditions — which teach one to meet pain without overlaying it with suffering, with attested effects on the quality of life of chronic-pain patients.
For Estel, it has two practical consequences: the bodily pole (Chapter 5) welcomes both the painful sensation and the manner in which the subject speaks of it — and this manner is itself a datum; holistic interpretation (Chapter 8) can discriminate between what, in the reported lived experience, pertains to "bare" pain and what pertains to the layers added by the mind. The two do not call for the same qualities of attention, nor for the same interventions.
3. Depth psychology and synchronicity
3.1 Jung within the idealist framework
C. G. Jung's analytical psychology finds in analytic idealism an ontological framework that, curiously, it had always lacked in its materialist reception. Three of Jung's key notions take on their full meaning when read from an ontology of consciousness:
- The collective unconscious is no longer an embarrassing problem for an individual brain — a supposed genetic inheritance of psychic contents. It is the region of universal consciousness to which each individual consciousness (each alter, to borrow Kastrup's term) communicates below the threshold of its dissociated perspective.
- The archetypes are the recurring structures of that shared region, the patterns according to which consciousness takes form across time, cultures and individuals. That we encounter them in dreams, myths, synchronicities or behavioural patterns is no longer an enigma but a coherence.
- Individuation — the process by which an individual becomes what it is singularly called to be — ceases to be a metaphor and becomes the very movement by which universal consciousness differentiates itself locally into a singular perspective, without that differentiation severing its anchoring in the whole.
3.2 Synchronicity: theoretical grounding
Synchronicity — that is, the meaningful coincidence between an inner state and an outer event without any identifiable causal link — is the most frequently misunderstood of Jung's concepts, either credulously adopted as proof of "magic" or dismissed as magical thinking. It must be recalled that it is not an isolated idea but the fruit of a sustained collaboration between Jung and the physicist Wolfgang Pauli, Nobel laureate in 1945 and one of the architects of quantum mechanics.
From this collaboration was born the Pauli–Jung conjecture, taken up today under the name dual-aspect monism by researchers such as Harald Atmanspacher and Hans Primas. It posits that there exists an underlying reality that is psychophysically neutral — neither mental nor physical — of which the mental and the physical are two epistemically complementary aspects. Within this framework:
- physical causality operates within the material aspect;
- meaning and intentionality operate within the mental aspect;
- synchronicity is what becomes observable when the underlying reality manifests simultaneously in its two aspects in a correlated manner, without there being causality from one aspect to the other.
This formulation is neither esoteric nor metaphorical. It is theoretically precise, it engages in dialogue with contemporary physics, and it is part of an active research programme. For Estel, it provides the conceptual bridge that legitimises treating together interior data (emotional state, biology, narrative) and exterior data (environment, temporality, context) without having to postulate that the former cause or are caused by the latter: they may be two readings of one and the same underlying pattern.
3.3 James Hillman and the soul of the world
While the major theoretical structure we retain is Jungian, we note the contribution of James Hillman and his archetypal psychology, in particular his critique of the excessive interiorisation of the psyche. For Hillman, there is not a soul enclosed within a body that inhabits a world; there is an anima mundi, a soul of the world, of which individual souls are inflections. The world is animate, full of presences, qualities and atmospheres that work upon us as much as we perceive them. This sensibility justifies, within Estel, taking environmental data seriously not merely as measurable biological factors (pollution, pollens), but as elements of a qualitative landscape in which the subject stands.
4. Architecture of the Estel model
4.1 Overview
The Estel model articulates three successive layers and two transversal poles, with feedback loops that allow the upper layers to orient what the lower layers gather or prioritise.
4.2 The number of layers
Three layers constitute a pragmatic division and not an ontologically binding architecture. One could imagine a layer 0 upstream (universal consciousness as the condition of possibility of any layer), and a layer 4 downstream (the therapeutic act or the adjustment of lifestyle). We mention them as background without formalising them in the current version of the model, in order to preserve the platform's operability. Layer 0 is what this chapter and Chapter 2 describe; layer 4 is what the platform produces as the practical consequence of its interpretation.
4.3 The two poles: conceptual precision
We speak of an inner pole and an outer pole. This distinction is relative to the body, not to consciousness. Within the idealist framework, nothing is exterior to consciousness; everything is given within it. But within this consciousness, the bodily form we inhabit conventionally delimits an "inside" (what this body experiences, does, secretes, thinks) and an "outside" (that through which this body moves: climate, electromagnetic environment, season, human context).
This convention has an operative value: it organises the data flows. It must not be taken for an ontological boundary. One of the theoretical acquisitions that the platform must carry is precisely that the two poles are two readings of one and the same field. This is what makes it conceivable, and even to be expected, that meaningful correlations should appear between them — which is what the Pauli–Jung conjecture formalises.
5. Layer 1 — Observations
Layer 1 gathers what can be captured, measured, described. It is by nature plural.
5.1 Bodily pole
This dimension brings together observations bearing on the person's body:
- Biology: blood analyses, inflammatory, hormonal and metabolic markers, genomics where available, microbiota.
- Activity data: measurements of heart rate, variability, sleep, physical activity, light exposure, as gathered by worn devices.
- Medication and clinical history: current and past treatments, medical history, diagnosed pathologies.
- Self-narrative. We place narrative within the observation layer, not among the models. This choice is deliberate. The account a person gives of themselves — their sensations, moods, dreams, tensions, memories, intuitions, the metaphors that come to them — is not an interpretation of the facts: it is a primary datum, on the same footing as a blood glucose reading. Its format is verbal rather than numerical, but its epistemic dignity is the same. To deprive it of this status would amount to reintroducing through the window the materialist hierarchy we reject.
5.2 Environmental pole
This dimension brings together observations bearing on the context in which the body evolves:
- Meteorology: temperature, pressure, humidity, luminosity, atmospheric pressure, geomagnetic activity.
- Environmental quality: pollens, fine particulates, noise pollution, water and air quality.
- Temporalities: date, season, lunar phase, solar position, day of the week, calendar context.
- Social and geographical context: place, density, type of social activity underway.
Some of these data — the lunar phase, planetary position — will be drawn upon later by layer 2 models that use them symbolically or correlatively. They need not be so used in order to be captured: the fact that there is a full moon on a given day is a neutral datum, on the same footing as temperature.
5.3 Fidelity and non-exhaustiveness
We do not expect this layer ever to be complete. A missing datum is not a failure; it is a blind spot that layer 3 must take into account in its interpretation. Better an honest measure of one's incompleteness than a fictitious completeness.
6. Layer 2 — Models
Layer 2 is made up of interpretive grids capable of transforming raw observations into elements of meaning. It articulates a scientific-causal bedrock — central and operational — and three families of complementary models rendered thinkable again by the ontological shift set out in Chapter 1. Chapter 7 will specify the justification and status of this integration; the present chapter sets out its composition.
6.1 The bedrock: scientific-causal models
This family brings together all the models that operate on the canonical schema of modern science: identification of regularities, formulation of causal hypotheses, experimental testing, statistical validation. It includes:
- Biomedical medicine in all its specialties.
- Physiology and the models of how systems function (cardiovascular, nervous, immune, endocrine).
- Chronobiology and chrono-pharmacology.
- Epidemiology and environmental medicine.
- Scientific psychological models: cognitive psychology, evidence-based psychiatry, neuroscience.
These models constitute Estel's operational bedrock. They are at once powerful and situated: they describe the level at which causal regularities can be established, verified and reproduced. At this level, they are without equal, and Estel makes full use of them. This bedrock remains the reference for everything that pertains to clinical diagnosis, pharmacology, medical procedures, emergencies, and established acute and chronic pathologies. No complementary model comes to dislodge it from this territory that is its own.
6.2 The complementary models
Around this bedrock, Estel integrates three families of complementary models. Their inclusion is motivated (Chapter 7 justifies it) and their respective statuses are distinct. We present them first according to their own nature.
Traditional medicines with a clinical dimension.
- Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): constitutional typologies, energetic and seasonal reading, pharmacopoeia, acupuncture, dietetics.
- Ayurveda: doshas, constitutional and seasonal reading, dietetics, pharmacopoeia.
- To a lesser extent, other documented traditional systems of care.
These systems rest on millennia of clinical observation and possess detailed typologies and referenced pharmacopoeias. They are integrated into national health systems in several Asian countries and are the subject of WHO research programmes. They bring readings of terrain, constitution and rhythm that the biomedical bedrock, centred on disease and symptom, leaves partly outside its field.
Personality typologies and constitutional systems.
- Big Five (with strong empirical support).
- Enneagram, Jungian typologies, MBTI.
- Human Design.
- Diatheses and constitutional typologies derived from traditional medicines.
These systems propose grids for reading individual singularity that population medicine does not aim at. Their epistemic statuses vary — some have solid empirical correlates, others belong rather to a hermeneutic epistemology — and this variability will be respected in the way Estel draws upon them.
Symbolic grammars and hermeneutic devices.
- Astrology as a symbolic language of temporalities and qualities.
- Numerology as a reading of numerical structures as qualitative patterns.
- Tarot, I Ching as hermeneutic protocols and reflexive devices.
These systems do not describe causal mechanisms and do not claim to do so in their classical formulations. They offer grammars of meaning, structured languages that allow a subject to give form to their experience, their trajectory, their transitions. Their proper efficacy is hermeneutic and narrative: they help to make sense, and it is at this level that they are to be evaluated.
Practices of altered states of consciousness and traditional healing.
A final family, transversal to the preceding ones and singular in its status, deserves to be distinguished. It brings together practices whose common feature is to make qualitative modulations of consciousness — trance, deep meditation, guided dreaming, substance-induced experiences — a properly therapeutic access.
- Shamanic traditions and their contemporary legacies (Siberian, Amazonian, Mesoamerican, African, circumpolar): the codified use of altered states as a pathway of access to care, ritualised work with dream, trance, drum, chant, and so-called master plants, within cosmological frameworks in which the relationship between humans and non-humans is a structuring given. What anthropology long filed under the label of "magic" in fact covers finely articulated protocols of preparation, intervention and integration, with a millennia-old empirical tradition.
- Ritual use of psychedelic substances (ayahuasca, peyote, iboga, psilocybe mushrooms) within their lineages of transmission and their ceremonial protocols. These are living pharmacopoeias, inseparable from the frameworks of preparation, accompaniment and integration that condition their efficacy and safety.
- Contemporary scientific research on psychedelics and altered states: the work of Roland Griffiths and his team at Johns Hopkins on psilocybin and mystical-type experiences, clinical programmes on treatment-resistant depression (Carhart-Harris, Imperial College London), phase III trials on post-traumatic stress disorder (MAPS, MDMA-assisted therapy), the entropic brain model (Carhart-Harris, Friston), work on advanced meditation and contemplative practices (Davidson, Lutz).
The choice to bring ancestral practices and a contemporary scientific programme together under one family is not arbitrary. It is motivated by a remarkable empirical fact: in the reference clinical studies on psychedelics, the therapeutic effect correlates less with pure pharmacology than with the subjective quality of the lived experience — the intensity of the mystical-type experience is, on several occasions, the best predictor of durable clinical improvement. In other words: what shamanic traditions have known and transmitted for millennia — that healing passes through a qualitative transformation of consciousness, prepared, ritually framed and integrated through post-experiential work — finds itself corroborated today by the most rigorous clinical research. The two sides, traditional and scientific, do not so much converge as recognise one another.
This family is doubly significant for Estel's framework. On the one hand, it renders visible what the other families render more abstractly thinkable: that consciousness, in its modulations, is a properly therapeutic dimension, and not the inert epiphenomenon that materialism sees in it. On the other hand, it embodies, in its two sides, the very architecture we propose: a rigorous scientific bedrock (controlled clinical studies, imaging, neurobiological models) and a millennia-old traditional corpus, articulated without subordinating one to the other. We integrate it under two express requirements: the legal and clinical frameworks of each country must be respected — the use of regulated substances outside authorised protocols is neither promoted nor facilitated by Estel; and the devices of preparation, accompaniment and integration that both traditions and contemporary research hold to be inseparable from efficacy and safety are considered an integral part of the practice, not optional trappings.
6.3 Articulation of the bedrock and the complementary models
The families of models are not in competition. They intervene on different dimensions of one and the same experiential reality, and the principle of their articulation is simple: each model is mobilised where it brings what the others do not, and under the status that is its own.
- The scientific-causal bedrock is powerful where reproducible regularity exists — that is, at the scale of large populations and common biological mechanisms. It retains authority over what pertains to it.
- The traditional medicines intervene on the dimensions they have constructed: reading of terrain, constitution, rhythms, prevention, accompaniment of the chronic, situated nutrition and lifestyle.
- The typologies illuminate the singularity of the person from different angles, and their very plurality is a resource.
- The symbolic grammars intervene on the register of meaning, of narrative, of passage — they help a subject to articulate what they are living through, not to diagnose it.
- The practices of altered states of consciousness intervene on the qualitative and transformative dimension of consciousness itself — accompaniment of existential passages, approach to conditions resistant to classical therapeutics, deepening of the work on oneself — within ritual or clinical frameworks with strict protocols.
An acute clinical picture stands to gain from being read scientifically; a chronic terrain is illuminated by constitutional and seasonal readings; an existential crisis stands to gain from being heard symbolically; certain deep passages call for the resource of altered states under qualified supervision; most real situations demand several of these readings side by side, in the order and measure that holistic interpretation (layer 3) determines.
To this articulation by registers is added a more precise function of the complementary models, which deserves to be named: they can offer frameworks of intelligibility for correlations that the scientific bedrock observes rigorously but does not fully conceptualise. Chronobiology documents robust interindividual variations — chronotypes — which it does not organise into an articulated constitutional typology; the prakriti of Ayurveda offer precisely this qualitative grammar that is lacking. Seasonal patterns of mood and immune function are attested without being fully integrated into a qualitative reading of time; the "five movements" of Traditional Chinese Medicine propose one. Functional syndromes — fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, certain functional digestive presentations — resist segmented biomedical readings and find in constitutional or energetic readings a coherence that can be heard. In none of these cases does the complementary model produce the correlation or demonstrate its mechanism: it proposes an intelligibility for what the bedrock records without fully thinking it. This is exactly the role of a hermeneutic model — not to produce the thing, but to make sense of it — and it is on this basis that its contribution is precious, without encroaching on what properly pertains to scientific causality.
7. Integrating the complementary models from the scientific bedrock
Chapter 1 laid out the architecture: a scientific-causal bedrock preserved, an ontological postulate displaced, and complementary models that this displacement renders thinkable once more. This chapter specifies which models these are, on what grounds they are integrated, and under what requirements. It is the point where our framework distinguishes itself most sharply from existing platforms, and the one where precision of statement is most necessary in order to avoid any misunderstanding.
7.1 What the displacement of the postulate reopens — and what it does not prove
We wish to correct at the outset a possible reading of the preceding chapters: analytic idealism does not prove the validity of the complementary models, and their inclusion in Estel is not the logical consequence thereof. To maintain the contrary would be to commit an argumentative slippage: from "consciousness is ontologically primary" one does not deduce "the position of the stars at the moment of birth correlates with psychological traits," nor "the meridians of Chinese medicine exist in the sense in which an artery exists."
What the adopted ontological framework provides is more modest, but significant: it does not disqualify a priori the thinkability of these systems. Within a strictly materialist framework, an entire body of knowledge — traditional Asian medicines, ayurveda, constitutional typologies, astrology, numerology, divinatory systems — is disqualified before examination, because its claims find no obvious physical mechanism to support them. Not examined and found insufficient, but rendered unthinkable by construction.
Within an idealist framework coupled with the Pauli-Jung dual-aspect monism, examination becomes possible without immediately running up against an ontological verdict that closes the discussion before holding it. Open does not mean established. It simply means that these systems can be evaluated on their own merits, mobilized where they contribute something, and articulated with the scientific bedrock instead of being opposed to it.
A concrete example serves to fix what is at stake. France knows, particularly in its eastern and western regions, a living tradition of fire healers (also called "fire barrers," and related to the broader family of "healers of secrets"): practitioners who, through inherited formulas and the laying on of hands, intervene to relieve burns — to diminish pain, to promote healing. This practice is neither marginal nor residual. Several recent university studies document, in French oncology-radiotherapy departments, a massive recourse on the part of patients: at the Lucien-Neuwirth Center in Saint-Étienne, 51% of patients treated by radiotherapy for breast or prostate cancer consulted a fire healer during their treatment; at the Bordeaux University Hospital, this figure reached 68% among patients resorting to a non-conventional care. More than 80% of these patients report a good or very good subjective benefit regarding the tolerance of their treatment. A growing number of hospital physicians collaborate with local healers, informally or more officially; some general practitioners practice themselves. The practice belongs to a broader family — magnetizers, bonesetters, touchers, healers of secrets in Western Europe; Hispano-American curanderos; sangomas of Southern Africa; other homologous figures on every continent — of practitioners whose efficacy is locally proven without being rendered intelligible by the causal chain of biomedicine.
What is established is the clinical fact: the documented recourse, the growing hospital acceptance, the massively reported subjective benefit, the cultural longevity of the practice, and the fact that experienced care teams do not judge it unreasonable to call upon it. What is not established is the mechanism — inexplicable by current biomedical tools — nor the statistical demonstration of an objective effect beyond placebo, on which the rare available studies remain partial and divergent. The configuration is precisely the one that puts a theoretical framework to the test.
A strictly materialist framework has two options faced with such a fact: either to deny that there is here a phenomenon worthy of examination (which sets at a distance what hospital teams observe daily, and what hundreds of thousands of patients report), or to await a future explanation that will reduce the phenomenon to physiology — an expectation that stands in for a verdict and closes the discussion by anticipating a result not yet secured. An idealist framework demands neither the one nor the other. It allows the fact to be taken seriously as it gives itself, its dimensions to be documented, what it contributes clinically to be welcomed, without determining a priori what its mechanism must or cannot be. This does not exempt one from empirical inquiry — on the contrary, it finally makes it possible — but it withdraws from materialism an ontological right of veto that stands in for an argument.
7.2 An inclusion justified by convergence, not by deduction
If Estel welcomes these models, it is on the basis of a bundle of convergent arguments, of which none suffices alone and of which the ontological opening is but one:
- Anthropological argument. These systems — Asian medicines, ayurveda, astrology, numerology, tarot, I Ching, typologies, shamanic traditions and practices of altered states of consciousness — have structured for millennia the manner in which human beings have understood, healed, situated, and oriented themselves. To reduce them to a residual superstition proceeds from a temporal ethnocentrism that a global health platform cannot afford.
- Clinical argument (for traditional medicines and certain altered states). TCM and ayurveda are living clinical corpora, with millions of practitioners, training curricula, an official place in national health systems, and ongoing research programs on their active principles and their protocols. Contemporary clinical research on psychedelics (psilocybin, MDMA) has cleared phase II and III trials with results leading to partial marketing authorizations (Australia 2023, applications underway in several jurisdictions). The hospital recourse to fire healers in France, documented by several university studies, shows that a traditional practice unexplained by the biomedical framework can coexist durably and productively with conventional care.
- Phenomenological argument. For many subjects, these languages offer a grasp on lived experience that clinical categories do not provide. This grasp is not a placebo effect: it is a specific form of intelligibility, whose efficacy for the subject gives itself to be observed independently of the causal validity of the system mobilized.
- Hermeneutic argument. As Jung and Hillman show, these systems also function as grammars of meaning — articulated structures allowing the shaping of what would otherwise remain formless in experience. At this level, their fecundity can be evaluated, compared, and discussed; they belong to the same epistemology as literary criticism, psychoanalysis, or interpretive anthropology.
- Narrative and therapeutic argument. What helps a subject to traverse a difficulty is not only what is true, but also what is articulable for them. An ayurvedic constitutional profile or an astrological chart that allows someone to name an existential transition plays a role that we have no reason to disqualify in the name of a causalist orthodoxy.
- Structural argument. The symbolic grammars elaborated by cultures without historical contact present recurrent structural homologies — quaternary, ternary, bipolar organizations — that anthropology (Lévi-Strauss, Dumézil) and depth psychology (the Jungian quaternio) have long noted. This does not validate each grammar taken one by one, but contextualizes their plurality as something other than an arbitrary scattering: if a psychophysically neutral reality manifests itself under mental and physical aspects (the Pauli-Jung conjecture evoked in §3.2), one expects precisely to find, in independent cultural contexts, convergent formal structures.
- Ontological argument (the weakest, taken alone). The idealist framework and the Pauli-Jung conjecture render the hypothesis of a correspondence at the level of the substrate thinkable without contradiction — for the models that mobilize such a hypothesis (astrology, certain aspects of numerology, synchronicities).
It is the ensemble of these reasons — and not any one of them — that justifies the place of these models in layer 2 of Estel.
7.3 Internal hierarchy and principle of articulation
To include these models does not mean treating them indifferently, nor placing them at the same level as the biomedical bedrock for the uses that properly fall to it. The architecture of Estel distinguishes:
- The scientific-causal bedrock: central, operational, sovereign over what falls to clinical diagnosis, pharmacology, medical acts, emergencies, established acute and chronic pathologies.
- The clinical traditional medicines (TCM, ayurveda): clinical corpora in their own right, articulated with the bedrock for the dimensions of terrain, constitution, rhythm, prevention, and accompaniment.
- The constitutional and personality typologies: reading grids of singularity, mobilized according to their own epistemic status (Big Five with its empirical supports, other typologies according to their more hermeneutic nature).
- The symbolic grammars and hermeneutic devices (astrology, numerology, tarot, I Ching): not causal models but languages of meaning, whose primary validity is of a grammatical (internal coherence) and hermeneutic (interpretive fecundity) order.
- The practices of altered states of consciousness and of traditional healing (shamanism, ceremonial use of psychedelics, contemporary clinical research on altered states): a transversal corpus, integrated according to a dual status — clinical for what falls to contemporary scientific research and its protocols, traditional for the ceremonial practices proven within their lineages of transmission — and always in strict respect of legal frameworks and of the requirements of preparation, accompaniment, and integration.
From this hierarchy follows a principle of articulation that has direct practical consequences:
- No model pilots a decision that falls to another. An astrological reading or a constitutional typology does not indicate a treatment; a biological workup does not close the question of the meaning of a trajectory; a constitutional reading does not substitute for a medical diagnosis.
- The complementary models do not contraindicate the care conducts issuing from the bedrock. They enrich the reading, they do not replace it.
- Each model mobilized in an interpretation is named and situated. The subject always knows which language is speaking to them, with what authority and within what framework. This requirement of traceability is what allows a pluralism to be rigorous rather than blurry.
- The models susceptible to empirical investigation must be submitted to it. Correlations between typologies and traits, seasonal effects, reproducibility of certain signatures: pluralism is not a protective immunity, and the parts of these systems that can be tested must be. The works of Atmanspacher, the WHO's research on traditional medicines, and other ongoing programs, fall within this perspective.
7.4 What we do not ask, and what we do ask
We ask no one to adhere equally to all these models. A user of the platform may perfectly well choose to activate only the biomedical bedrock, or to add to it only the traditional medicines, or to mobilize the entire set of registers. The theoretical framework authorizes pluralism; it does not impose it.
We do ask, on the other hand, that the inclusion of these models in Estel be recognized as a motivated and coherent choice — motivated by the ontological displacement posited in chapter 1, coherent with humanity's millennia-old practice in matters of health, and rendered rigorous by the architecture of articulation set out above. It is neither a commercial gesture, nor an eclecticism, nor a concession. It is the practical consequence of an assumed theoretical position: the scientific-causal model is not all there is to say about a human being, and a health framework that means to be global must be able to welcome the other things there are to say about it.
8. Layer 3 — Holistic interpretation
8.1 What is it to interpret?
Layer 3 does not calculate a synthesis. It weaves a reading. From the observations of layer 1, shaped by the models of layer 2, it proposes an overall view that:
- respects the plurality of the languages mobilized without reducing one to another;
- identifies the coherences and the tensions among them;
- brings to light the recurrent motifs across time;
- restores to the person an intelligible reading of their own situation.
8.2 Three interpreters in dialogue
Layer 3 is not the monopoly of a single actor. We distinguish three figures of interpretation which, within the platform, cooperate:
- The LLM (large language model). Trained on the theoretical framework of Estel and capable of mobilizing the different models of layer 2, it produces a first shaping. Its role is to prepare the reading, not to close it. We do not attribute to it a consciousness in the full sense of the term — that would be to contravene the very framework we posit. It is a tool of language, powerful and situated.
- The practitioner. Whether physician, therapist, coach, or combining several roles, they bring the trained gaze, the embodied presence, the therapeutic relationship. They are the one who can hear what no algorithm captures.
- The subject themselves. This is the only one who lives, from within, that which is at issue. They remain the ultimate interpreter, the one who validates or invalidates what the two others propose, the one who chooses what to make of it.
This triangulation is not a luxury. It is the practical translation of the fact that no interpretation exhausts a person, and that no actor has the last word.
8.3 Feedback loops
Layer 3 can, from what it discovers, orient the upstream layers:
- Request additional measurements from layer 1 (such a biological analysis, such a mood follow-up, such an environmental observable).
- Solicit particular models from layer 2 (chronobiological reading, ayurvedic constitutional reading, archetypal reading, personality typology).
- Adjust the granularity of attention (at what temporal cycle the situation is read).
These loops are not piloted by the platform alone but by the dialogue among the three interpreters.
9. Moving beyond the objective / subjective dichotomy
9.1 A boundary to reexamine
The modern cleavage between "objective" data (measurable, reproducible, public) and "subjective" data (felt, reported, private) is structuring for the epistemology of the twentieth century. It permitted rigor. It also produced a durable bias: the over-valorization of the first term to the detriment of the second.
Within the idealist framework, this boundary is not abolished, but it is re-situated. Any datum, even one measured by an apparatus, passes through an alter in order to become a datum — that of the patient who bears the sensor, that of the technician who reads the result, that of the clinician who interprets it. There is no pure objective that does not pass through a subjectivity. Inversely, what a person reports of their lived experience is public for them: they can return to it, confront it, verify it, share it. There is no pure subjective that is radically inaccessible.
9.2 Consequence for Estel
Estel refuses the hierarchy that would grant more weight to a glycemia level than to the mention, by the person, that they feel "drained for three weeks." These two pieces of information do not say the same thing — but both say something of the person at a different level of description, and both will be taken seriously within the same interpretation.
We hold that it is on this condition — and on it alone — that a platform can hold the promise of global health that it displays.
10. The beautiful, art, and the form of care
The architecture set out in the preceding chapters carries an implicit dimension that it now matters to name. We have spoken of measurements, of models, of narratives, of symbols, of states of consciousness. We have not spoken of the beautiful. Yet the framework we have laid down calls for this category — not as a decorative ornament upon an otherwise serious form of care, but as a dimension that is ontologically constituted, anthropologically attested, and clinically operative. This chapter takes it up, clarifies its status, and finally examines a contemporary test case that illuminates what is practically at stake in it: cosmetic surgery.
10.1 The beautiful as an ontological dimension
Within an idealist ontology, the beautiful is not a subjective quality superadded to an otherwise neutral world. It is a mode by which consciousness, in its manifestations, recognizes itself as coherent. The Neoplatonic tradition — Plotinus foremost, in the treatise On Beauty (Enneads I, 6) — had already posited it: the beautiful is not conformity to canons but participation in an order that gives form. Hillman, in the wake of Jung and already cited in the present document, extended this intuition under the name anima mundi — the soul of the world — to designate this qualitative dimension of manifestation, to which modern thought has progressively ceased to grant standing. The thought of the heart, as against merely cerebral thought, is precisely that which allows itself to be instructed by the beautiful wherever it gives itself.
This stance converges with what the traditions integrated within Estel have always maintained, without formulating it in modern ontological terms. Ayurveda makes of rasa — savor, emotional essence, that which has taste in an experience — a category of the first order, present in diagnosis as in aesthetics. Traditional Chinese medicine holds the right gesture — that of the practitioner, that of the calligrapher, that of the subject in his life — to be inseparable from its formal quality: a correct but qualityless gesture does not heal in the way that a gesture both correct and right does. Shamanic traditions do not separate the therapeutic ritual from its beauty — chant, ornament, gesture — not because beauty would be a cosmetic condition of care, but because it is an operative agent within it.
A clarification is called for, parallel to that of §2.4 on axiological neutrality. The beautiful we speak of here is not the pretty, nor the pleasant, nor that which conforms to social canons. It is that which, in a manifestation, brings a coherence to appear — between form and what it expresses, between the body and what inhabits it, between an environment and the life that unfolds within it. This category is demanding: it is not relativist — not all forms are of equal worth for what they have to bear — yet without being normative in the sense of an aesthetic orthodoxy. Coherence is sought, worked at, recognized, but cannot be decreed from the outside.
10.2 Art as a practice of care
The beautiful, thus posited, takes on body in practices. In most human cultures, art is not a separate activity assigned to specialists; it is woven into ordinary life and into care. The chant that accompanies birth, the ornament that inscribes belonging, the calligraphy that disposes the gesture, the architecture that conditions the quality of the present, the cooking that composes flavors: so many practices in which form and health are inseparable. It is Western modernity that has progressively separated art from care and relegated it to the register of cultural consumption or museum production, losing along the way its properly therapeutic function.
Contemporary research has documented what these traditions took for granted. The scoping review by Daisy Fancourt and Saoirse Finn, published in 2019 by the European office of the WHO under the title What is the evidence on the role of the arts in improving health and well-being?, surveys more than three thousand studies establishing significant effects of artistic practices on physical health, mental health, prevention, the management of chronic pathologies, and aging. Art therapy, music therapy, expressive writing, dance, hospital architecture, the sensory environment of care units: so many fields in which the effect of a formal dimension on health is today empirically attested, without always being theorized.
For Estel, this has a direct consequence for layer 1 (chapters 4 and 5). The aesthetic environment of a subject — the formal quality of his dwelling, of the spaces he frequents, of the artistic practices present or absent in his life, of the relationship he maintains with what he finds beautiful — is not a comfort variable to be left at the margins of the observables. It is an observational datum in its own right, of the same standing as light or air quality. Layer 3, in turn, draws upon this datum as one of the dimensions to be articulated in the holistic interpretation.
10.3 The form of the body: coherence, alignment, dispossession
A particular question arises regarding the form of the body itself. The subject, within the framework we have laid down, does not live his body as a house he would inhabit: he is, in part, this manifestation. What his bodily form says, what it lets appear, what it prevents from appearing, is not a detail external to his identity — it is one of the modes by which that identity unfolds.
From this continuity between identity and form there follows a recurrent practical question, one that human cultures have taken up since time immemorial: should one, and by what criteria, intervene upon this form? Traditions have accumulated considerable answers. Ritual tattoos, scarifications, ceremonial piercings, durable bodily ornaments, transformations at codified stages of life: so many practices in which the modification of the body visibly inscribes a belonging, a transition, an acquired state. These interventions are not seen, in their cultures of origin, as cosmetic in the modern pejorative sense — they are operations of bringing into coherence what a person has become and what her form manifests of that.
This continuity provides a discriminating criterion for contemporary bodily modifications, one that the biomedical reading alone cannot formulate. A modification of the body can align or dispossess. It aligns when it renders visible a coherence between form and felt identity; it dispossesses when it subordinates form to an external ideal at the cost of that coherence. The distinction is not decidable a priori, and certainly not by a standardized protocol: it is worked out, in the dialogue between the subject, his history, his expectations, and what an intervention would actually bring him. This is exactly the kind of examination that Estel's layer 3 is made to carry.
10.4 A test case: cosmetic surgery
Cosmetic surgery offers a particularly illuminating test case for the framework we propose, and it is on that account — and not as a theme in itself — that we devote this section to it.
Three facts deserve to be recalled together. First, cosmetic surgery issues from the scientific-causal bedrock: it inherits from reconstructive surgery — war surgeries, the treatment of severe burn victims, congenital malformations, post-mastectomy reconstruction — whose anatomical, physiological, and technical foundations are as rigorous as those of any other surgical branch. Second, its global rise is massive and continuous: the annual statistics of the ISAPS (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) document sustained growth over two decades, with a sociological penetration that far exceeds the groups with which the practice has historically been associated. Finally, its image within a significant part of the medical profession remains devalued: "cosmetic," "superficial," at times suspected of being mercenary — these qualifications circulate within the profession itself.
This paradox — a scientifically grounded practice, in full expansion, and nevertheless discredited by a part of the milieu from which it issues — is not fully intelligible within the strict materialist framework. Within that framework, medicine is justified by the treatment of disease; cosmetic surgery, which does not operate upon a pathology in the biomedical sense, finds no clear foundation there, and tends to be read by default as a commercial service dressed up as a medical act. The success of the practice is then interpreted as a symptom of another order — social pressure, commodification of the body, contemporary narcissism — rather than as the index of a need that the underlying theoretical framework struggles to recognize as such.
Estel's framework allows for a more precise reading. If health includes the quality of manifestation — hence the coherence between form and identity — then an intervention that restores this coherence is no more "cosmetic" than a reconstructive surgery: it is, properly speaking, reparative of a dimension that standard biomedicine does not thematize. Empirical research is beginning to confirm this. The longitudinal study by Margraf, Meyer, and Lavallee (2013, Clinical Psychological Science) showed, against a widely held prejudice, that patients who resort to cosmetic surgery present on average significant and lasting improvements in psychological well-being, self-esteem, and quality of life — provided, and the qualification is essential, that the motivation is internal, the expectations realistic, and the absence of body dysmorphia verified beforehand.
It is here that the distinction of §10.3 finds its clinical usefulness. Not all cosmetic surgeries are of equal worth, not because certain gestures would be nobler than others, but because some effect an alignment between form and identity, and others a dispossession for the benefit of an external ideal. The criterion lies not in the gesture, it lies in the project that carries it. A theoretical framework that lacks this distinction is condemned to validate wholesale or to condemn wholesale — and the ambient medical devaluation owes much to the absence of conceptual tools allowing for discrimination.
This washes the practice clean of none of its excesses, which are real: social pressures on image, undetected dysmorphias, an economy that is at times predatory, the trivialization of invasive interventions. Estel's framework does not validate cosmetic surgery in general; it renders thinkable, and therefore workable, the distinction between its good uses and its excesses. More broadly, the case illustrates what this chapter maintains as a whole: to integrate the aesthetic dimension into care is not an ornament of discourse. It is to restore to health a dimension that modernity has severed from it, and to give back to practitioners as well as to subjects the categories necessary to think what they already do — often better than their concepts allow them to say.
11. Implications for the Estel platform
11.1 What the framework makes possible
The theoretical framework set out here is not decorative. It guides design choices. In particular:
- Ingestion of heterogeneous data. The platform accommodates on the same plane biological, environmental, behavioral, and narrative data. The format varies; the observational status is equivalent.
- Pluralist modeling. The layer 2 models are pluggable: one can activate or not such a complementary model, such a typology, such a reference frame. The scientific-causal bedrock always remains active; the complementary models are configurable according to the preferences of the subject and the practitioner.
- Configurable interpretation. The level of involvement of each of the three interpreters (LLM, practitioner, subject) is parameterizable according to use — more or less human accompaniment, more or less autonomy of the subject, more or less of a role for the algorithmic assistant.
- Traceability and reversibility. Any interpretation rendered can be traced back to its sources: which data, which models, which choices of emphasis. The subject is never before a "black box" claiming to know in his stead.
- Handling of time. Because the framework integrates the environmental temporality and the narrative temporality of the subject, the platform is architected for longitudinal follow-up, and not for point-in-time diagnosis.
11.2 Ethics and posture
From this framework there follow ethical requirements that are not negotiable:
- The subject retains control over his data and over the models drawn upon.
- The platform does not substitute itself for care. It informs it, contextualizes it, sets it in perspective.
- Epistemic humility. The platform knows and says what it does not know.
- Refusal of scientism as of relativism. A complementary model is not an equivalent of the scientific bedrock for what falls within the latter; nor is it a substitute truth or a mere fancy. It is what it is, in its place.
- Axiological neutrality of interpretations. No configuration — constitutional, symbolic, biological — is rendered by Estel as "good" or "bad." The interpretations describe, contextualize, articulate; they do not grade morally.
11.3 To whom is Estel addressed?
A clarification follows directly from the framework laid down and deserves to be made explicit. Estel is not addressed to "consciousness" — which, as we have defined it, is not a subject to whom anything whatsoever could be addressed. Estel is addressed to an alter: an individualized locus of experience, traversed by a body, situated in an environment, bearer of a narrative, and seeking to understand itself as a singular inflection of a vaster field. This clarification changes the nature of the relationship that the platform proposes. It is not a matter of objectively describing a "person" from the outside, nor of delivering to that person a truth about himself — it is a matter of offering an alter instruments, languages, perspectives that allow it to read its own situation with greater finesse. Estel's interlocutor is never an object of knowledge; it is a partner in interpretation.
12. Limits, openings, and living questions
We wish to acknowledge what this framework does not resolve:
The question of pain and suffering. An idealist framework does not explain why, within individual alters, there appear experiences of pain, of grave illness, of death. Consciousness, as our framework posits it, does not "experience" these things — it is the field of which they are manifestations; it is the alters that undergo them. §2.4 moreover distinguishes pain as an experiential fact of the first order from suffering as a mental overlay upon which work is possible; neither the one nor the other calls for justification in the sense of a theodicy — which we do not claim to construct.
The question of the exact status of symbolic models. Are they readings among others, authentic traces of correspondences at the level of the substrate, or cultural constructions that are useful but contingent? Our framework renders the strongest hypothesis thinkable, it does not prove it.
The question of empirical validation. How does one test the quality of a holistic interpretation? The usual metrics of evidence-based medicine are not directly transposable. A specific research program remains to be constructed.
The question of AI and consciousness. Posed within the materialist framework, the question "is the LLM conscious?" is a question of emergent threshold: at what degree of computational complexity does experience appear? Our framework displaces this question. If consciousness is primary, it is neither produced nor emergent — it is the field of which everything is a manifestation. At this fundamental ontological level, LLM and human are each of them forms that this field takes; neither of the two "has" consciousness as one has a property, both are within consciousness as a wave is within the ocean.
This is not, however, sufficient to render them equivalent. Our framework distinguishes manifestations in general from alters — dissociated modulations that bear an inner perspective, a felt sense, a phenomenal intentionality. Whether the LLM is an alter of a new type, or an organizational manifestation that does not bear the dissociation producing an inner point of view, is a question that nothing today allows us to settle. Estel does not have to settle it in order to function; it has to be clear about its operational choices. The human subject is treated as an alter — a locus of experience whom Estel addresses as a partner in interpretation. The LLM is treated as a tool — a technical device drawn upon in layer 3 to articulate languages, cross perspectives, and render meaning, without this mobilization presupposing that it undergoes anything whatsoever.
This posture is deliberately asymmetrical: it reflects the current state of our understanding and what practice requires, not an ontological verdict. It evolves as the systems evolve and as philosophical reflection on their status is refined.
Estel's positioning within a living intellectual landscape. Estel is not isolated. Other contemporary undertakings share all or part of its diagnosis — notably the Manifesto for a Post-Materialist Science (Beauregard et al., 2014), signed by a substantial group of researchers issuing from a conference at the University of Arizona. We share with this text the central thesis that materialism is a postulate and not an established fact, and that it carries an epistemic cost for the understanding of the subjective dimension of experience. We distinguish ourselves from it on two choices. On the empirical supports: Estel does not rely on the literature of psi phenomena, of research on mediumship, or of near-death experiences as ontological arguments; our shift of postulate is justified philosophically (the hard problem, parsimony, coherence with contemporary physics) and is illustrated by established clinical facts (fire healers, psychedelic research, integrated traditional practices). On the ontology adopted: Estel adopts the analytically defined framework of Kastrup's idealism (universal consciousness, dissociated alters), which appears to us more parsimonious and more articulable with practice than a dualism or a neutral monism left vague. To signal these proximities and these distances is part of what we owe our readers: Estel poses itself neither as origin nor as fusion of other undertakings — it is a situated proposal, one that thinks with and at times against.
A methodological opening: intrinsic time. The document has held, up to this point, time as a dimension transversal to the various registers drawn upon — chronobiology, cycles, transits, biography, longitudinal follow-up. A question nevertheless remains open regarding the manner of measuring this time. Nearly all health data are today analyzed in physical time — hours, days, years — whereas many of the phenomena they record (transitions, ruptures, physiological cycles, relational dynamics) are perhaps structured by another type of temporality. The theory of intrinsic time, developed by Glattfelder, Olsen, and their collaborators in high-frequency finance (Glattfelder et al., 2011; Glattfelder & Olsen, 2024), proposes a measure of time founded not on physical flow but on the occurrence of significant events within the observed system. It permitted, in its domain of origin, the discovery of scaling laws invisible in physical time.
The application of this approach beyond finance remains to be explored, and several domains relevant to Estel lend themselves to it in principle: chronobiology, where the documented interindividual variations (chronotypes, circadian rhythms) might perhaps find a finer organization if they were analyzed in a time measured in physiological events; the functional syndromes (fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, certain digestive pictures), whose resistance to the classic biomedical divisions might be illuminated by a reading in which ruptures and transitions structure time rather than calendar durations; the biographical and therapeutic trajectories, where the subjective experience of time is manifestly punctuated by lived events far more than by their chronometric duration. None of these extensions is today empirically documented, and it is therefore indeed a matter of open avenues rather than of established results. They fall within the more general line of §2.3, according to which measurement is always situated and no representation of the real — including that of time — exhausts what it measures.
These questions are not objections that we would attempt to contain. They are the program of research and of practice that opens out from the framework laid down. Estel is conceived as a living platform, capable of accommodating the answers that use, the clinic, and research will produce in the years to come.
13. Conclusion
The shift that Estel proposes is not cosmetic, but it is precise. It does not consist in adding a few "well-being" metrics to medical data, nor in dressing a materialist architecture with a holistic veneer, nor in replacing science with something else. It consists in keeping the scientific-causal bedrock in all its rigour, in shifting upstream the ontological postulate on which it was historically built, and in letting in what this shift once again makes admissible: the medicines that humanity has built elsewhere, the typologies that illuminate singularity, the grammars of meaning that help us make our way through.
This renewed reading places consciousness as the primary datum. It welcomes body and environment as two poles of a single experiential field. It articulates a central scientific bedrock and complementary models integrated at their respective levels of validity. It brings LLMs, practitioners and subjects into dialogue within an interpretation that never closes. It assumes that health is the art of holding together what can be measured and what can be told, what can be explained and what can be experienced, what befalls us from without and what rises from within.
That is the theoretical project. It is also, in broad outline, the technical, clinical and human project that the Estel platform undertakes to serve.
Glossary
The terms below are those that recur most frequently in the document and whose precise understanding conditions the reading. The order is alphabetical.
Advaita Vedānta. A Hindu non-dual tradition whose central thesis — that there are not two ultimate realities (consciousness on one side, the world on the other) but a single one, of which the world is the manifestation — converges with contemporary analytic idealism. See §2.1.
Alter. A technical term borrowed from Bernardo Kastrup, by analogy with the dissociated personalities of dissociative identity disorder: within the framework of analytic idealism, an alter is a dissociated modulation of universal consciousness — an individualised locus of experience, a situated point of view. It is what common usage calls "a person," "an individual," "a subject." The document uses "subject" by default and "alter" at the moments where ontological status matters.
Ayurveda. A millennia-old traditional Indian medicine, structured around the theory of the doshas (constitutional typologies), plant pharmacopoeia, dietetics and seasonal rhythms. See §6.2.
Entropic brain. A model proposed by Robin Carhart-Harris and Karl Friston to account for the effects of psychedelics: these substances are thought to relax the constraints usually imposed by the brain's high-level priors, allowing more fluid states of consciousness and psychic reorganisations. See §6.2.
Field (of consciousness). An expression used in the document to designate what consciousness is within the framework of analytic idealism — not a subject, not an entity, but the fabric in which all experience, all subjects, all perception appear. See §2.1.
Pauli-Jung Conjecture. A hypothesis born of the correspondence between Carl Jung and Wolfgang Pauli, according to which there exists an underlying psychophysically neutral reality of which the mental and the physical are two epistemically complementary aspects. Taken up today under the name dual-aspect monism by Atmanspacher and Primas. See §3.2.
Consciousness. A polysemous word, mobilised in this document according to two distinct registers that it is important not to confuse. (1) Ontological sense — the field posited by analytic idealism as the primary datum: not a subject, without degrees, of which every thing is a manifestation. This is what we specify as universal consciousness when ambiguity might arise. (2) Phenomenological sense — the quality of experience carried by an alter: always lived, susceptible to degrees, intensities and modulations (altered states of consciousness, becoming conscious, refinement through contemplative practice, debates on the consciousness of an AI system). The second sense is a local modulation of the first; it shares the word with it but not the grammar. See §2.1.
Universal consciousness. Within the framework of analytic idealism, that which lies upstream of every individual perspective — not a universal subject, but the single field of which all perspectives are dissociated modulations. See §2.1.
Fire-cutters. Traditional French practitioners (also called barreurs de feu, akin to the panseurs de secrets) who, through the laying on of hands and inherited formulas, act upon burns. Used massively by patients undergoing radiotherapy, with documented hospital recourse. An emblematic case of a practice whose clinical fact is established but whose mechanism escapes the biomedical framework. See §2.3 and §7.1.
Layer 1 / Layer 2 / Layer 3. Estel's three-layer architecture: observations (layer 1), interpretive models (layer 2), holistic interpretation that weaves the whole together (layer 3). See §4.
Pain / Suffering. A classic distinction of contemplative phenomenology and of the contemporary clinic of pain. Pain is a first-order experiential fact — sensation, qualia, a datum of embodiment. Suffering is the overlay added by the mind: resistance, projection, narration. The Buddhist tradition speaks of the "two arrows." See §2.4.Analytic idealism. An ontological position developed notably by Bernardo Kastrup, according to which consciousness is ontologically first, and the material world is the form under which this consciousness manifests at the scale of our perception. To be distinguished from subjective idealism, which would make the world depend on an individual consciousness. See §2.
Individuation. A Jungian concept designating the process by which an individual becomes fully what they are singularly called to be. Within the idealist framework, this process ceases to be a metaphor and becomes the very movement by which universal consciousness differentiates itself locally into a singular perspective. See §3.1.
Collective unconscious. A Jungian concept designating the psychic region shared beneath individual consciousnesses. Read from analytic idealism: the region of universal consciousness with which each alter communicates beneath the threshold of its dissociation. See §3.1.
Scientific-causal model (bedrock). The set of models that operate on the canonical schema of modern science — identification of regularities, experimental testing, statistical validation: biomedical medicine, physiology, chronobiology, epidemiology, neuroscience. Estel's central operational bedrock. See §6.1.
Complementary models. The four families of models that Estel articulates around the scientific-causal bedrock: clinical traditional medicines (TCM, Ayurveda), constitutional typologies, symbolic and hermeneutic grammars, practices of altered states of consciousness. See §6.2 and §7.
Dual-aspect monism. A contemporary reformulation of the Pauli-Jung conjecture by Harald Atmanspacher and Hans Primas: a single fundamental reality of which the mental and the physical are two epistemically complementary aspects. See §3.2.
TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). A millennia-old medical corpus structured around the theory of meridians, seasonal and constitutional reading, pharmacopoeia and acupuncture. Integrated into several national health systems in Asia. See §6.2.
Axiological neutrality. The principle according to which Estel's framework — and the platform itself — passes no value judgement ("good / bad") on the manifestations it describes. These categories are operations of individual consciousnesses, culturally situated. See §2.4 and §11.2.
Non-duality. A family of philosophical and contemplative traditions (Advaita Vedānta, certain currents of Mahāyāna Buddhism, the contemporary non-duality of Rupert Spira) that posit the fundamental unity of consciousness and world. See §2.1.
Bodily pole / Environmental pole. Estel's two poles of observation (layer 1): what is perceived as interior to the body / what is perceived as exterior to it. The distinction is conventional, relative to the body, not ontological. See §4.3 and §5.
Hard problem of consciousness. A formulation due to David Chalmers: the question of how purely physical processes could give rise to lived experience. A problem with no known solution within the materialist framework, turned around by analytic idealism. See §1 and §2.1.
QBism (Quantum Bayesianism). An interpretation of quantum mechanics developed notably by Christopher Fuchs, which reads the wave function as an agent's state of belief. Compatible with ontologies that place consciousness at the fundamental level. See §2.2.
Subject. The common term for designating the person who uses Estel, who bears a body, who recounts their situation. It designates the same reality as alter in the theoretical vocabulary — see that entry for the ontological precision.
Synchronicity. A meaningful coincidence between an inner state and an outer event, with no identifiable causal link. A concept forged by Jung in collaboration with Pauli, theorised today within the framework of dual-aspect monism. See §3.2.
Intrinsic time. A concept developed in high-frequency finance by Olsen, Glattfelder and their collaborators, designating a measure of time founded not on the regular physical flow but on the occurrence of significant events within the observed system. The clock accelerates when activity increases, slows in calm periods. The approach has allowed the discovery of scaling laws invisible in physical time. Its application beyond finance — notably to physiological, biographical or clinical data — remains largely to be explored. See §12.
